Help support Rohingya women affected by recent fire

On March 22, 2021, a devastating fire broke out in three Rohingya refugee camps in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar killing 11 refugees and leaving more than 10,000 households without shelter. Two weeks after the fire, aid agencies and the Government of Bangladesh continue to work together to meet the immediate needs of the 48,300 individuals who lost their homes and personal belongings.

SITUATION OF WOMEN AND GIRLS

The fire destroyed most of the shelters, latrines, healthcare centers, and water points in Camp 9. All women’s centers in Camp 9 were also burnt to the ground. Women, adolescent girls, and children are highly exposed to the risk of violence and abuse without adequate shelter and well-lit and safe latrines at night. Respondents of the Joint Needs Assessment conducted by the humanitarian community identified unsafe living areas, sexual harassment, and violence as the main concerns for women’s safety. Additionally, women and adolescent girls are facing difficulties since they have no sanitary napkins or hygienic cloths to manage their menstruation.

UN Women asked women, pregnant women, lactating mothers, adolescent girls and boys, disabled, widow, and elderly people in Camp 9 what they need. Abaya/hijab was at the top of the list because the Rohingya community practices Purdah and women are expected to not appear in public uncovered. We found that during the day many women who lost their abaya/hijab in the fire are unable go outside of their temporary shelters to collect relief items and food, or access relief services such as health care. Without abaya/hijab they also refrain from using latrines during the day and are only venturing out at night, putting themselves at increased security and health risk. Women surveyed also asked for mosquito nets, toothpaste and toothbrush, sandals, comb, and most importantly sleeping mats.
