The UN Women USA for UN Women walks are an annual event across the United States that draw attention to the issue of gender-based violence and highlight UN Women’s programs to stop violence against women and girls. Violence against women and girls is one of the world’s most widespread human right violations. It cuts across the boundaries of age, race, culture, wealth and geography. And it happens everywhere: at home and at work, on the streets and in schools, during times of peace and conflict. Up to 70 percent of women and girls will be beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in their lifetime.

Thanks to everyone who came out to raise awareness to stop violence against women and girls in memory of Yolanda Norwood in 2015! We want to also thank the sponsors of our 2015 walk.
This year’s North Carolina chapter walk is in memory of Yolanda Norwood. Yolanda served as Regional Vice-President for the UN Women USA for UN Women. She also served on the Board of the Coastal Carolina Chapter of the UNA-USA, where she focused on issues relating to women and children. In these positions, Yolanda organized the Annual Walk to End Violence against Women and Girls Worldwide from 2011 to 2013. In addition, Yolanda was the president of the Wilmington NC Chapter of The Links, Inc. The memories of our time with Yolanda will be forever engraved in the hearts of all those she met and worked with. Her kindness, smile, and infectious laugh will be missed.
